Mudik Karena Takut Air, 2013-2014 (with Ida Lawrence)

MUDIK KARENA TAKUT AIR 2013-2014 (DETAIL)
MIXED MEDIA INSTALLATIONS
VARIABLE DIMENSIONS

Mudik karena takut air was developed as a reworking of the Nge-Kost project with Eko Bambang Wisnu, an Indonesian artist based in Bandung. Both installations were responses to our experiences living in dormitory-style accommodation while studying in Yogyakarta, Indonesia (I was there 2010-2013). Mudik karena takut air can be translated into English as Returning home, afraid of water. This ‘returning home’ (mudik) refers to the journey one makes back to their hometown, usually for a reunion with ones family: for an important event such as Lebaran (the celebration at the end of Ramadhan), a family member’s wedding or a funeral. In preparation, cardboard boxes are filled with possessions or food and souvenirs (oleh-oleh) and these items are secured using raffia for easier travel on one’s journey home.
